The Thrive Programme® for parents

Children and teens these days can have a lot to contend with, whether it's issues with their confidence, friendships, identity, and now challenges brought about by Covid and lockdown.

In the UK, 1 in 6 children aged 5-16 are likely to have a mental health problem, and 50% of all mental health problems start by the age of 14 (stats from the Children's Society).

If your child is struggling with anxieties or symptoms, the good news is that mental health issues are entirely resolvable with the right intervention. And as parents, we have the ability to help our children to Thrive: to have good self esteem, feel in control, face challenges and have robust coping skills.

Like our physical health, good or poor mental health isn’t something that we’re born with. As children, we learn how to manage our thoughts, behaviours and emotions through learning from our parents or guardians plus other societal and social influences – these aren’t things that are magically implanted in our brain at birth. They are learned behaviours and form the basis for our mental health.

As a parent, you may wish to go through The Thrive Programme® if:

Your child is too young to go through the programme by themselves (usually younger than 10/11 years old).

Your child is not motivated to go through the programme themselves, and you would like to learn how to help them to Thrive.

You want/need to accompany and support your child or teenager as they go through the programme.

The benefits of going through the programme as a parent include:

-You'll be a great role model for your child

Children are like sponges and absorb so much from their parents in terms of their beliefs, thinking styles, responses and coping skills. However, this also means that they may copy and adopt the more unhelpful responses from a parent too. The advantages of having one or two thriving parental role models from which they can learn and develop cannot be underestimated.

Children are actually quite malleable and adaptable which is great news because it means that even just minor changes in your parenting can lead to positive changes in their thinking, emotions and responses. By  understanding how to respond to them in the most helpful way in your interactions with them and know how to best help and support them, without colluding with them. When you are thriving, you won't have to pretend to be a happy, confident and calm person....you will genuinely feel it.

- You will understand what makes your child tick and know how to best respond to them

There are a whole host of specific psychological components that cause a child's symptoms and anxieties, whether it's issues with their self esteem, social anxiety or fearful responses. In order to help them to overcome these issues, it's really important that you recognise them and have the tools to know how to change them. Often, a significant factor underlying children's issues is control, so as parents it's key that you understand how their difficulties around control have lead to their anxieties and issues. Even just minor changes to parenting can lead to significant positive changes which enable children to have a healthy control over their lives.

- You'll create strong, positive dynamics in your household

The insights that you learn from the programme will be distilled down to your child in your many, many interactions and communications with them. How you behave towards them, speak to them and what you teach them will be the key to overcoming their issues and learning to Thrive. Children predominently learn and develop from what they experience in life, rather than from what their parent's simply tell them. You will essentially learn to be their own personal Thrive Coach, drip-feeding the insights and knowledge you gain down to them in your day to day lives.

Any mental health specialist, whether that's a Thrive Coach, a counsellor, a child psychologist, etc, will only be working with a child for an hour or two a week. Compare this to the amount of time that a parent spends with their time - it's really just a drop in the ocean in comparison.

Please don't feel daunted by that prospect! You will find that everything you learn in the programme is logical, sensible and easy to understand and can be quickly and effectively imparted to your child.

Kat and Phil, parents of a 7 year old with phobia of sick

Our daughter had a fear of being sick which escalated into other anxieties which was having an impact on her everyday life.  This course has given us back a quality of life and most importantly given our child back that sparkle in her eyes that was missing for soo long. We as a family can not recommend this course enough it.
